The jury, made up of 50 independent journalists, evaluated more than 50 of the best new vehicles introduced for the 2012 models year before choosing the top three trucks and top three cars. Back in 2009, the Hyundai Genesis earned the honor of being Car of the Year, and the Elantra won panelists over this year with its exceptional value and striking design language.
Needless to say, Hyundai is pretty proud of the Elantra. "[It] speaks to the success of our recipe of bold design and great fuel economy," says John Krafcik, President and Chief Executive Officer, Hyundai Motor America. "In a year with some truly breakthrough competitors, we are honored that the jury recognizes Elantra's far-reaching impact on the industry."1
Judges take into account innovation, industry impact, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and overall value. Winning the award is one thing, but we have to say, the other two finalists are pretty impressive. Both the Passat and the Focus have garnered unprecedented attention from journalists and critics for all of the above.
So, what bumped the Elantra above the others? According to juror Jayne O'Donnell, "The Hyundai Elantra is sporty, yet sensible. Luxurious, yet affordable. Spunky, but safe. ...a series of paradoxes and every one is another argument for the latest, impressive entry in the Hyundai lineup."2
