Today, Hyundai boasts a wide lineup of IIHS Top Safety Picks, Kelley Blue Book Green Cars, and even one North American Car of the Year. The story was a bit different in 1986 when the Korean automaker launched their Excel. Not because the Excel wasn't a great car - in fact, drivers loved it for its affordability and laundry list of available features and trim levels - but, because Asian automakers (Like Toyota, Honda and Nissan) already had a strong hold on the market.
But instead of getting discouraged and pulling their lineup from the North American market, they offered drivers something that nobody else had offered before: a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty. And they felt confident enough in their product to believe that not many people would have to take advantage of it. And it worked.
More people started buying Hyundai models. And then the automaker doubled down on their investment in design and comfort, creating aerodynamic and stylish vehicles that were fuel-efficient and safe, on top of everything else.
To further underline their commitment to providing drivers with the best in affordability and dependability, when the recession hit America a few years ago, Hyundai introduce their Assurance program. Which, in 2009, allowed buyers to return their vehicles within a year of purchase if they lost their job. Since then, the plan has been expanded to guarantee trade-in values within four years of purchase.
It's all still working. And Hyundai continues to deliver award-winning models that are both nice to look at and fun to drive. Take, for example, the Hyundai Veloster, a three-door hatchback that takes sporty to a whole new level. Or, how about the Hyundai Elantra, 2012's North American Car of the Year?
