Last week, our team here at your Hyundai dealers serving Richmond, Future Hyundai of Concord, was thrilled to learn that two of our most popular models had been named Top Safety Pick+ vehicles! Both the 2016 Hyundai Tucson and the 2016 Hyundai Sonata earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) top designation! Keep reading to learn more about what makes these two vehicles so safe!

The IIHS rates vehicles for occupant safety based on five different tests: moderate overlap frontal offset, small overlap frontal offset, side impact, roof strength, and rear crash performance. To be named a Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must earn the top score of Good in all the moderate overlap, side impact, roof strength, and rear crash performance tests as well as a Good or Acceptable in the very difficult small overlap test. Each vehicle must also offer a front crash prevention system that earned an advanced or superior rating. David Zuby, IIHS chief research officer, had this to say about the two Hyundai models:

"Hyundai’s redesign of the Tucson earns the 2016 model our top rating in the small overlap front test, and the Sonata retains its acceptable rating. Both vehicles have an available front crash prevention system that earns a superior rating in the IIHS autobrake test, a key criteria to qualify for a Top Safety Pick+ award."

Multiple advanced safety systems and equipment are available on both models, including lane departure warning, smart cruise control with stop/start capability, rear cross-traffic alert, electronic brakeforce distribution with brake assist, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alerts, lane change system, forward collision warning and more! Mike O’Brien, vice president, Corporate and Product Planning, HMA, had this to say:

"Hyundai’s commitment to occupant safety is paramount throughout our entire lineup. We strive to develop technologies that assist in avoiding crashes all together, like forward collision warning, lane departure warning and emergency brake assist, and are pleased the Tucson and Sonata have received these awards related to occupant protection when collisions do occur."
