Earlier this month, Hyundai Motor America announced that the 2016 Hyundai Sonata had passed one of the most demanding vehicle safety tests with flying colors! The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the midsize sedan its prestigious TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation after the sedan successfully handled its tough regime of crash tests.

The midsize 2016 Hyundai Sonata has added several new safety features and systems to go along with those previously available, all of which include Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross Traffic Alerts, Lane Departure Warning, Smart Cruise Control, and more! Mike O’Brien, vice president, corporate and product planning, had this to say about earning the honor:

"Occupant safety, above all other things, is the single most important factor when designing and engineering Hyundai vehicles. Receiving this award, given the increasing demands of the test, is a testament to our emphasis on safety at every price point, and is a point of pride for every Hyundai associate."

For the 2016 model year, the requirements to earn the TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation were tightened as each model is now required to earn the top rating of Good in each of the five crash tests: small-overlap frontal-offset, moderate-overlap frontal offset, side impact, rear crash performance, and roof strength tests. Previously, a vehicle only needed an Acceptable (the second-highest IIHS rating) to earn the designation. A vehicle also must receive a score of Superior or Advanced for available front crash prevention systems. Adrian Lund, IIHS president, had this to say about the impressiveness of the 2016 Hyundai Sonata and its focus on safety:

"While the Sonata received the same TOP SAFETY PICK+ award in 2015, the vehicle’s structure was improved to raise the small overlap front ratings from acceptable to good. With a more rigorous test environment for 2016, receiving another TOP SAFETY PICK+ award acknowledges Hyundai’s commitment to occupant safety by consistently engineering strength and quality improvements into its vehicles."
